What Is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a restoration that repairs a tooth damaged by decay or wear. When bacteria produce acid that eats through enamel and into the softer dentin layer, we call the resulting damage a cavity. At Thrive Dental, we remove the decayed portion and fill the space with biocompatible material that restores function and appearance.

Filling Materials at Thrive Dental

We offer several filling material options:

Composite Resin (Tooth-Colored): Our primary choice. These materials bond directly to your tooth, require less tooth removal than traditional amalgam, and match your natural tooth color perfectly. Composites last 5-10+ years with good care.

Amalgam (Silver): A traditional, durable option that’s less common today. Visible in the mouth, amalgam requires more tooth removal and doesn’t bond to tooth structure.

Gold and Ceramic: Premium materials offering exceptional durability. These are custom-fabricated off-site and typically used for large or visible cavities. Dr. Sekhon and our team at Thrive Dental discuss whether these options suit your needs and budget.

The Filling Process: Step-by-Step

Numbing: We apply topical numbing gel to the area, then inject local anesthetic. You’ll feel slight pressure for a few seconds—then nothing. The area is completely numb within 3-5 minutes.

Decay Removal: Using a small rotating drill (handpiece), we gently remove all decayed tooth structure. This sounds like a small whirring sound and feels like gentle pressure. We avoid removing healthy tooth material.

Tooth Preparation: We shape the cavity to create an ideal foundation for the filling, using burs of increasing diameter to ensure proper depth and contour.

Bonding: We apply a bonding agent to the prepared tooth, which helps the composite material stick permanently to your tooth.

Composite Application: Using a small brush, we place tooth-colored composite resin in thin layers. After each layer, we harden it with a blue curing light (photopolymerization). This builds the restoration layer by layer.

Shaping and Polishing: Once the composite is fully hardened, we use fine burs and polishing stones to shape it to match your natural bite and contours. We polish the surface until it’s smooth and shiny, blending seamlessly with your tooth.

Bite Check: We verify that your bite feels comfortable and balanced. If needed, we adjust the filling’s height slightly.

What to Expect

The entire procedure typically takes 20-45 minutes depending on cavity size and location. You’ll recline comfortably in our chair at any Thrive Dental location—Dixon, Elk Grove, Yuba City, Stockton, or Santa Clara—while our dentist works carefully.

Your tooth will feel numb for 1-2 hours after the appointment. Avoid eating until the anesthetic wears off to prevent biting your cheek or lip.

After Your Filling

Your tooth may feel slightly tender or sensitive for a few days. This is normal and temporary. Avoid very hard, sticky, or hot foods for 24 hours. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and continue flossing—avoid flossing that area tightly for 24 hours.

Your composite filling is fully set before you leave, but it reaches maximum hardness after 24 hours. To extend the life of your filling, maintain excellent oral hygiene—brush twice daily, floss daily, and visit Thrive Dental every six months for professional cleanings.

When a Filling Might Fail

Fillings can crack, chip, or leak if subjected to extreme pressure (chewing ice or hard candy), over time with wear, or if decay develops at the edges. If your filling feels sharp, painful, or loose, call Thrive Dental—we can repair or replace it quickly.

Why Choose Fillings at Thrive Dental

We prioritize speed and comfort. Our tooth-colored composite fillings can often be placed in a single appointment using minimal tooth drilling—we remove only the decayed portion, preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible. Your finished filling is polished smooth and color-matched so precisely that it’s virtually invisible, even on front teeth. Same-day completion means you leave with your tooth fully restored.

Prevent future cavities with professional cleanings and fluoride treatment. If a cavity is deep and affects the nerve, you may need root canal treatment. If tooth decay is extensive, digital X-rays help determine the best approach. Visit any of our five locations across Northern California or book your appointment today.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Composite (tooth-colored) fillings blend with your natural tooth and bond directly to tooth structure, requiring less tooth removal. Amalgam (silver) fillings are durable but visible and less conservative. Gold and ceramic are premium options. At Thrive Dental, we recommend composites for most patients because of their appearance and durability.

No. We numb the area completely with local anesthetic before we start. You'll feel gentle pressure and vibration from our dental instruments, but no pain. If you feel any discomfort, tell us immediately and we'll add more anesthetic.

High-quality composite fillings typically last 5-10 years or longer with excellent oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Longevity depends on filling size, location, and your brushing and flossing habits.

Wait 1-2 hours after your appointment until the anesthetic wears off so you don't accidentally bite your cheek. For the first 24 hours, avoid very hard foods (like nuts or ice), sticky foods (like caramel), and very hot foods.

No. At Thrive Dental, we match the composite material precisely to your natural tooth shade and translucency, so your filling is virtually invisible—even on front teeth.

We apply numbing gel and local anesthetic, remove the decayed portion of your tooth, prepare the tooth surface, apply bonding agent, place composite resin in layers, shape and contour it, harden it with a blue curing light, and finally polish it smooth.
