Emergency Dentistry
Emergency dental care at Thrive Dental provides same-day relief for severe pain, broken teeth, and dental trauma.
Dental Emergencies Don’t Wait
Pain in your mouth gets your attention. A broken tooth, swollen jaw, or knocked-out tooth demands immediate care. At Thrive Dental, we understand dental emergencies cannot wait for your next regular appointment. We reserve time for urgent cases and work to see emergency patients the same day they call.
Our dentists are experienced in diagnosing and treating emergency situations with efficiency, compassion, and focus on stopping pain and preventing tooth loss.
Common Dental Emergencies
Severe Toothache: Throbbing, constant pain that wakes you at night usually means infection or deep decay. Pain relievers provide temporary relief only—professional treatment is essential to save the tooth.
Fractured or Chipped Tooth: A blow to the mouth or biting on something hard can crack or chip teeth. Even small chips expose softer inner structures and allow bacteria to enter. Fractured teeth need professional evaluation and restoration.
Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed): An impact that drives a tooth completely out of its socket is a true emergency. Teeth replanted within 30 minutes have the best chance of surviving long-term. After 2 hours, the root cells begin to die.
Lost Filling or Crown: When a filling or crown dislodges, the underlying tooth becomes exposed, sensitive, and vulnerable to decay and infection. The exposed surface can also break, complicating treatment.
Swelling in Face or Jaw: Facial swelling usually indicates infection spreading beyond the tooth root into bone or soft tissues. This can become serious if untreated, potentially affecting breathing or vision. Swelling is an emergency.
Severe Mouth Injury: Lacerations to lips, tongue, or oral soft tissues, injuries to the jaw, or broken teeth from trauma all need evaluation and treatment.
Abscess (Pus Drainage): A pimple-like bump on the gum or cheek, or pus drainage from a tooth, indicates infection. Abscesses can spread dangerous bacteria through your bloodstream. Seek care immediately.
First Aid: What to Do Right Now
For a Knocked-Out Tooth:
- Find the tooth immediately
- Hold it by the crown (white part), never touch the root
- Rinse gently with water if dirty—do not scrub
- Try carefully reinserting it into the socket, or
- Place it in milk (or saline solution, or your mouth) to keep it alive
- Drive to Thrive Dental immediately—do not wait
For a Fractured or Chipped Tooth:
- Save any fragments
- Rinse mouth with warm salt water
- Control bleeding with gauze for 10 minutes
- Avoid chewing that side
- Apply ice to the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes to reduce swelling
- Call Thrive Dental for emergency appointment
For a Severe Toothache:
- Rinse mouth with warm salt water
- Floss gently to remove trapped food or debris
- Take over-the-counter pain reliever per package directions
- Apply ice to the outside of your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
- Call Thrive Dental—do not use numbing gels directly on your gum, as they can burn tissues
For a Lost Filling or Crown:
- Call Thrive Dental immediately
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Apply over-the-counter temporary filling material or dental cement to protect the exposed tooth
- Do not use super glue or other adhesives—they can damage your tooth or gum

- Rinse gently with warm salt water
- Control bleeding with clean gauze for 10-15 minutes
- Apply ice to reduce swelling
- Take pain reliever if comfortable
- Call Thrive Dental immediately, especially if swelling worsens or affects breathing

Permanent Solutions After Emergency Treatment
Emergency treatment addresses immediate pain and damage. Within 1-2 weeks, we discuss and plan permanent restoration:
- Knocked-Out Tooth: If successfully replanted, the tooth may need root canal therapy (4-6 weeks after replantation). If not replanted, implant, bridge, or partial denture.
- Fractured Tooth: May need root canal therapy if the fracture exposed the nerve, followed by a crown.
- Lost Filling: Simple refilling if decay is minimal; crown if the tooth is extensively damaged.
- Lost Crown: If the tooth is intact, we fabricate a new crown. If the tooth is damaged, root canal therapy and crown may be needed.
- Abscess: Root canal therapy if the tooth is salvageable; extraction if the tooth cannot be saved.
Prevention: Avoiding Dental Emergencies
Many emergencies are preventable:
- Wear a mouthguard during sports and physical activities
- Avoid chewing on hard objects (ice, hard candy, bones, pens)
- Use your teeth only for eating—not as tools to open packages
- Address small problems promptly before they become emergencies
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent decay and gum disease
- Visit Thrive Dental regularly for professional cleanings and examinations
When Emergency Care Becomes Urgent
Seek immediate care at an emergency room if you experience:
- Severe facial swelling affecting breathing
- Swelling extending to the neck or throat
- High fever with tooth pain
- Unable to swallow or speak
- Obvious bone fracture
- Severe mouth lacerations requiring stitches
Thrive Dental handles most dental emergencies in our office. But if you suspect a serious underlying condition, always err on the side of caution and seek emergency room evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Severe tooth pain (especially if throbbing), swelling in the face or jaw, knocked-out teeth, fractured or chipped teeth, lost fillings or crowns, food or objects stuck between teeth causing pain, and mouth injuries all qualify. When in doubt, call Thrive Dental—we'll advise whether you need to be seen.
We reserve appointment slots for emergency patients and strive to see urgent cases as quickly as possible, often the same day depending on availability. Call immediately and inform us that you have a dental emergency. We understand pain cannot wait.
Locate the tooth. Hold it by the crown (the white part), never the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty—don't use soap. Try gently reinserting it into the socket and holding it in place with your finger or by carefully biting on gauze. If that's not possible, place the tooth in milk (milk contains calcium and keeps the root cells alive) and drive to Thrive Dental immediately. Time is critical—teeth replanted within 30 minutes have the best survival rate.
Save any tooth fragments you find. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If there's bleeding, bite gently on gauze for 10 minutes. Avoid chewing on that side. Apply ice to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Call Thrive Dental immediately for an emergency appointment.
Rinse with warm salt water to flush out debris or infection. Floss gently to remove any trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as directed. Apply a cold compress to your cheek for 20 minutes at a time to numb the area. But remember: pain medication treats symptoms, not the problem. A severe toothache usually indicates infection or deep decay requiring professional diagnosis and treatment. Call Thrive Dental right away.
Call Thrive Dental for an emergency appointment. Until you can be seen, avoid chewing on that side. If the exposed tooth is sensitive, apply over-the-counter dental cement (available at pharmacies) or a temporary filling material to protect it. Don't delay—exposed teeth deteriorate quickly and can become infected.
Emergency treatment focuses on stopping pain and preventing further damage. We may provide a temporary solution to stabilize your tooth, then schedule follow-up treatment for permanent restoration. We explain what caused the emergency and discuss prevention and permanent solutions.
