Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening brightens your smile by multiple shades in a single visit using advanced bleaching agents.

Professional teeth whitening treatment at Thrive Dental

A radiant smile makes an unforgettable impression. Professional teeth whitening is one of the fastest, most dramatic ways to transform your appearance without cosmetic procedures.

Why Professional Whitening Works Better

Store-bought whitening strips and trays contain weak bleaching agents—typically 3-5% peroxide. Professional whitening at Thrive Dental uses 15-35% concentration under controlled conditions, delivering results that are 10 times more effective. Our dentists apply protective barriers to your gums and use professional-grade equipment to ensure even, safe bleaching.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your whitening appointment takes about one hour. We’ll start by protecting your gums with a rubber shield, then apply professional-strength whitening gel to all visible tooth surfaces. The gel sits for 15-20 minutes while a specialized light activates the bleaching process. We remove the gel, rinse thoroughly, and repeat this cycle 2-3 times. Most patients notice dramatic lightening after the first cycle. Results vary depending on the type and severity of discoloration.

Who’s a Good Candidate

Whitening works best if you have:

  • Natural teeth (yellowing or darkened from stains or aging)
  • Healthy gums (minor inflammation is fine; we treat it first)
  • Realistic expectations (you’ll be noticeably brighter, but not unnaturally white)

Whitening is not ideal if you have extensive crowns or fillings in the smile zone, or deeply intrinsic stains from medication or trauma. In those cases, veneers or bonding may deliver better results.

Understanding Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Stains

Professional whitening is highly effective for extrinsic stains (surface stains on the enamel layer). These come from external sources: coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, dark sauces, and aging. Whitening removes these stains with excellent results.

However, some stains are intrinsic (deep within the tooth). These result from:

  • Medication (tetracycline antibiotics, minocycline)
  • Trauma or damage to the tooth nerve
  • Excessive fluoride during childhood (fluorosis)
  • Natural aging (the inner dentin naturally darkens over decades)

Intrinsic stains respond more slowly to whitening and may require veneers or bonding for optimal results. Dr. Sekhon will assess your stains during consultation and recommend the best approach.

Managing Sensitivity

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet after whitening. This happens because whitening temporarily increases enamel permeability. The good news: sensitivity is temporary (usually 24-72 hours) and we can minimize it.

Before whitening: We apply a desensitizing agent to your teeth to reduce sensitivity risk.

After whitening: We apply fluoride and desensitizing gel to reseal enamel and reduce post-treatment sensitivity.

At home:

  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste for a few days
  • Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks for 48 hours
  • Skip acidic beverages (soda, citrus) temporarily

If sensitivity persists beyond a few days, contact us. We can apply additional desensitizing treatments.

The “White Diet” After Whitening

The 48 hours immediately following whitening are crucial. Your enamel is slightly more porous and absorbs color easily. Avoid these:

Don’t eat:

  • Dark foods: berries, beets, dark chocolate, soy sauce, spaghetti sauce
  • Dark colored foods with strong pigment

Don’t drink:

  • Coffee, tea, dark sodas, red wine, cola
  • Dark juices (cranberry, grape)
  • Alcohol that’s dark

Avoid:

  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Anything you wouldn’t spill on a white shirt

Do eat/drink:

  • Chicken, turkey, white fish
  • White pasta (with white sauce only)
  • Rice, white bread
  • White cheese, vanilla yogurt
  • Egg whites, white beans
  • Clear drinks (water, clear sports drinks, white wine)

This “white diet” is only for 48 hours. After that, your teeth are back to normal porosity. You can resume normal diet, though ongoing caution with heavily staining foods and drinks extends results.

Two Whitening Approaches: In-Office vs. At-Home

In-Office Professional Whitening

  • Results: Dramatic (2-8 shades) in one hour
  • Strength: High-concentration bleaching agent (15-35% peroxide)
  • Best for: Patients wanting immediate, maximum results
  • Ideal timing: Before events, when you want fastest results
  • Duration: 1-2 years typically

Custom Take-Home Tray Kits

  • Results: 2-8 shades over 1-2 weeks of use
  • Strength: Professional-grade agent, lower concentration
  • Best for: Patients preferring gradual results, ongoing maintenance
  • Cost: Less expensive than in-office
  • Duration: Results last 6-24 months depending on use

Many patients do in-office whitening first for dramatic initial results, then maintain with take-home trays every 3-6 months. This approach keeps teeth continuously bright without repeated expensive office visits.

Real Expectations: Natural-Looking Whitening

Your teeth can become noticeably brighter, but there’s a limit. Most people’s natural tooth color ranges from yellow to slightly gray. Whitening lifts color within your natural range—it won’t make teeth unnaturally white like plastic. A skilled dentist aims for your teeth to be noticeably brighter than before but still natural-looking and proportionate to your complexion.

Dr. Sekhon will show you shade guides and before-and-afters so you understand realistic results before treatment.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients see results of 2-8 shades lighter in a single one-hour session. The exact amount depends on your starting shade and tooth structure. Dr. Sekhon will show you shade guides during your consultation so you know what to expect.

Professional whitening removes extrinsic stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and aging. These stains sit on and within the tooth surface. Intrinsic stains (inside the tooth from medication or trauma) respond less effectively and may be better treated with veneers or bonding.

In-office whitening delivers immediate, dramatic results in one visit. Custom take-home trays work more gradually over 1-2 weeks but offer convenience and are less expensive. Many patients do in-office first, then maintain with trays at home.

Results typically last 6 months to 2 years depending on diet and habits. If you drink coffee or wine regularly, results may fade faster. Touch-up treatments can maintain your brightness indefinitely.

Professional whitening is safe and doesn't damage tooth structure when done correctly. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity to hot and cold. We use desensitizing treatments before and after to minimize this. Sensitivity usually fades within a few days.

No. Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. If you have visible crowns or fillings, whitening the surrounding teeth may create a mismatch. We can replace these restorations to match your newly whitened teeth.
